House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member David Scott today released the below statement following threats made by President-elect Donald Trump to levy 25 percent tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico and 10 percent tariffs on goods imported from China. “As American families prepare to gather for Thanksgiving dinner, President-elect Trump plans to drive up food prices by instituting reckless tariffs. Every single day, Americans visit grocery stores and buy food imported from Canada and Mexico. “As our nation struggles to increase housing inventory to drive down the cost of living, Trump’s tariffs on lumber will make housing less affordable. “His plan to put a tariff on Canadian potash—an essential mineral in fertilizer—precisely when farmers are penciling out whether they can afford to plant a crop next year is inexplicable. Trump’s tariffs will cost us at the grocery store, in our homes, and make it harder for American farmers to stay in business.” |
