Ranking Member Angie Craig Statement on Trade War with Canada

Today, House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-MN-02) responded to President Trump’s order to double tariffs on all steel and aluminum from Canada from 25 percent to 50 percent.

“There are times that tariffs can be strategic. This is not one of them. The Administration is ignoring the real and immediate economic impact its trade policy is having on rural communities and family farmers. A trade war on one of our largest trading partners hurts manufacturers, farmers and consumers. Making tractors requires a lot of steel, and increasing the cost of metal will squeeze farm equipment manufacturers and retailers and make it a lot more expensive for family farmers to buy the equipment they need. For consumers, increasing the price of aluminum makes everything from baking sheets to foil to canned foods and drinks more expensive. I am very concerned that this whiplash approach to trade will increase costs for family farmers and hardworking Americans. And it is certainly creating uncertainty for businesses up and down the supply chain.”
