Today, House Agriculture Ranking Member Angie Craig (D-MN-02) led a bipartisan, bicameral effort to designate today, March 27th, as National Women in Agriculture Day.

“As the first woman to serve as ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee in its 205-year history, I take particular pride in introducing this year’s National Women in Agriculture Day resolution. From the Pioneer Era to today, women have played a critical role in American agriculture. Women are farmers, ranchers, foresters and agri-business owners. This resolution honors and celebrates their hard work.”

The resolution, which Ranking Member Craig introduced with Congresswoman Kat Cammack (R-FL-03), honors the essential role of women in American agriculture. Senators Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Tina Smith (D-MN) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Background

  • Compared to male producers, women in agriculture are slightly younger and more likely to live on the farm they operate.
  • Around 40.5 percent of beginning farmers are women.
