Today, House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig (MN-02) released the below statement following a press conference hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04), at which Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins admitted that the Trump administration was failing the American people with regard to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“Secretary Rollins said one honest thing today: The government is failing the American people. Republicans control the House, Senate and White House. The Trump administration has the legal authority and funds necessary to get November SNAP benefits out the door. They are illegally withholding food from 42 million Americans, and it is shameful," said Ranking Member Craig.

At the press conference, Secretary Rollins said: "My message to America is first, the fact that your government is failing you right now. That poverty is not red or blue. It is not a Republican or Democrat issue. It doesn't matter who you voted for or even if you voted. That if you are in a position where you can't feed your family, and you are relying on that $187 dollars a month for an average family in the SNAP program, that we have failed you."

Secretary Rollins' comments come as the Trump administration illegally refuses to distribute SNAP benefits in November in an attempt to pressure Congressional Democrats into allowing Republican majorities in the House and Senate to increase health insurance costs for millions of Americans.

Earlier this year, Republicans made the largest cut to SNAP in American history, gutting the program by $186 billion in their "One, Big Beautiful Bill Act" law. The law will lead to millions of Americans losing the food assistance they need to feed themselves and their families.
