Subcommittee Highlights Innovation in Rural Development

Liz Friedlander (202) 225-1564 James Ryder (202) 225-0020 - Today, the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Rural Development, Biotechnology, Specialty Crops and Foreign Agriculture held a hearing to review innovative approaches to rural development. “Rural communities face challenging obstacles in securing jobs and economic development opportunities,” said Chairman “Population shifts continue to present challenges for agricultural communities. Providing opportunities for rural Rural communities have always faced challenges in securing sufficient infrastructure investment to connect disperse populations, providing services to rural citizens, and attracting or growing job opportunities. The current state of the economy creates additional hurdles. Rural communities have lost a higher percentage of jobs than have urban areas, according to a recent report published by the Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI). The Subcommittee heard testimony from researchers, educators and community leaders on approaches to rural development that have led to success in communities around the country.
