Recognizing the Continuing Contributions of the 1890s Land-Grant Universities on the 125th Anniversary of the Passage of the Second Morrill Act

“Good morning. I am glad to be here today to celebrate the anniversary of the enactment of the Second Morrill Act.
“I am pleased our land-grant university presidents could join us today, including the president of the newest land-grant university, Dr. Cynthia Jackson-Hammond, from Central State University in Ohio. Thank you all for the good work you do.
“As the Chairman said, land-grant universities play an important role in agricultural research, extension and educational programs.
“Research is vital to agriculture. USDA’s research, education and extension programs help increase productivity, prevent plant and animal disease, improve human nutrition and health, and discover and utilize new technologies. I look forward to future hearings on agriculture research.
“Again, I welcome today’s witnesses. I look forward to your testimony and yield back.”
