Costa Statement on UN World Food Programme Receiving the Nobel Peace Prize

(FRESNO) – Congressman Jim Costa (CA-16), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture, issued the following statement in response to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations World Food Programme:

“As I’ve long said, food security is national security, and today’s announcement emphasizes the important connection between stamping out global hunger and striving for world peace,” said Costa. “The 2018 Farm Bill reaffirmed Congress’s bipartisan support for international food assistance programs like Food for Peace and McGovern-Dole Food for Education that help to enable America’s farmers and WFP to work together to help feed the world. With nearly 100 million people expected to need urgent humanitarian food assistance globally this year, it is essential that the U.S. continues to work with our international partners. I congratulate the World Food Programme on this prestigious honor and look forward to continuing to support their work.”
