Chairman David Scott and Subcommittee Chair Jahana Hayes Issue Statement Following Hearing on Food Insecurity

WASHINGTON – House Agriculture Committee Chairman David Scott and Nutrition, Oversight, and Department Operations Subcommittee Chair Jahana Hayes issued the following statement after today’s hearing entitled: "A Look at Food Insecurity in America":

“Today’s hearing was just the start of the work the Agriculture Committee will do to address hunger and food insecurity in this country,” said Chairman Scott.

“The testimony we heard today did an expert job of laying out the scope of this issue and solidified something we’ve known for years: SNAP works and we must do all we can to ensure that important program continues to provide assistance to those who need it."

Scott continued, "We will take what we heard today and push for solutions, particularly how food security impacts rural communities and the role that local grocers and convenience stores might have in providing convenient access to nutritious food. I look forward to working with Subcommittee Chair Hayes to find solutions in the coming months.”

“I am pleased that Chairman Scott called this important hearing on food insecurity in America,” said Hayes. “COVID-19 has shined a light on the expansive problem of chronic hunger across our nation. We have a unique opportunity to take the lessons learned and ensure that communities are better insulated from hunger when disaster strikes. The Nutrition, Oversight, and Department Operations Subcommittee will work to actively address this crisis in the coming months.”
