Fudge Urges More Time for Input on USDA’s Proposed Changes to SNAP Eligibility

Fudge of Ohio in a letter Friday urged Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to extend the comment period on USDA’s proposal to further restrict the eligibility of able-bodied adults without dependents to receive benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Fudge of Ohio in a letter Friday urged Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to extend the comment period on USDA’s proposal to further restrict the eligibility of able-bodied adults without dependents to receive benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
In the letter, Fudge argued the extra time is needed given a similar provision to the proposed rule was debated at length as part of negotiations on the 2018 Farm Bill and overwhelmingly rejected.
“This language was vetted in detail for five full months by Members of the 2018 Farm Bill Conference Committee before being struck from the final bill,” Fudge wrote. “As you know, the House and Senate ultimately passed a Farm Bill conference report by historic margins, and the President signed the bill without delay.”
In the letter, Fudge reminded Secretary Perdue of his promise that USDA would do its “best to implement that bill” as Congress intended.
“This proposed rule does just the opposite,” wrote Fudge.
